"What if...?” This is the question I ask myself as I begin each new piece of art, and it’s the same question I repeat often during the process. It opens me up to new possibilites. It urges me to try new techniques and to go beyond my comfort zone. It leads me on an unpredictable and exciting journey - sometimes frightening, but never boring!
In working with paint or fabric, I love to explore and to be surprised by happy accidents. Even the struggle to make them an integral part of each piece is a challenge that brings me enjoyment.
I do not plan my work in advance. I begin with a vague idea of a design, or maybe a color I want to use, or a texture I want to create. I try to dialog with the art as it is in process and listen to discover what it wants to be.
The exploration of texture is what draws me back again and again. I work in layers - some exposed, some hidden, some revealed after being scratched or removed in various ways. The result is a work with complex surfaces and great freedom of expression.
Excitement and willingness to respond to new ideas are common threads in my work. I desire for the viewer to see my joy in self expression and creativity while sensing a spiritual force underlying it all.
